“Why are you so nervous? It’s just a Christmas party.” Nick said nonchalantly towards Amanda who clearly showed every nervous emotion. It was stitched onto her face, so evident that Nick, the obviously observant one, caught onto it. Amanda folded her arms over her chest and shrugged uncomfortably, gazing at the door she would walk into and wondering what was on the other side, “Maybe because this is your family? Maybe it’s because they’ll hate me? Maybe because I’m not a Jonas? A foreigner? A stranger?” Amanda was good at questions, there was no doubt about that, but Nick couldn’t believe the doubt he was hearing. “You’re my fiancee, Amanda, there’s no way that they could hate someone I’m going to marry.” Amanda shrugged again. She’s always been skeptical, but this was new territory. Nick, to try and ease her worries, slithered a swift hand around her waist, making sure she was comfortable. And Amanda wasn’t going to admit it, but she felt a little better. Walking into the house was a different story. Parents and grandparents holding little children on their laps, pets running around the house and all over the place seemed to overwhelm Amanda at first, but then after a few hellos and introductions as “the fiancee”, Amanda found herself swirling with greetings. She finally caught her breath as Nick told her to sit down on a nearby love seat and he was going to get them a glass of champagne. Amanda could feel the love seat shift next to her, and after looking over to her left she met the eyes of a familiar person that she knew other than Mrs. Jonas, Nick’s mother. “Happy holidays Mrs. Jonas.” Amanda said politely. Mrs. Jonas flashed her a genuine, happy smile, “Same to you sweetheart. You seem to be all over the place now that you’re with Nick. Man, that boy never slows down. I mean look at him now; he totally pivoted directions from going to get you a refreshment.” As soon as she said that, Amanda’s head twirled to find Nick. And when she did, she saw him sitting on the couch across from her, cuddling and toying with a blonde baby boy, probably a cousin or nephew, Amanda assumed. What she didn’t know was that her heart coated with love and amazement. Seeing Nick play with kids was not only encouraging, but invigorating to her. Nick looked up from the boy’s blue eyes and instantly locked with Amanda with a goofy grin that said ‘Can we keep him?’
