“I can’t believe we made it just in time for the ball to drop! Oh, I’ve always wanted to see the ball drop on New Years.” Nick’s girlfriend, Victoria, squealed excitedly. With his arms around her waist, keeping her from slipping away and drowning in the sea of people, Nick’s heart was beating three times as fast as it usually does. His palms are sweating, not because of how hot it was to slip his hands in Hannah’s coat pockets as they danced in the cold wind, but the fact that there’s something huge about to happen. The crowd surrounding the couple ignited in cheers as the ball started descend down the pole. Chanting, the thousands of people started counting down from ten. Nick put his lips to Hannah’s ear and whispered loud enough for her to hear, “So I’ve come up with a composition.” he said. Ten, nine, eight… Hannah giggled as she payed some attention. Seven six five… Hannah turned her head up at the sparkling sky, ”What’s that?” she questioned as she felt Nick’s arms pull from her coat pockets. Four, three, two, one. Nick braced himself as the crowd bursted with cheer, screaming greetings of the new year that had arrived. Hannah paid no attention to the falling confetti petals, for Nick was on the ground, left knee to the pavement with the brightest diamond set ring on display for her. “It’s the start of a new year,” he began with a childish voice, “But I want to spend all the rest of them with you and you only. But, in order for that to happen, you have to marry me.” he said with a goofy grin. Between watching her shocked silhouette and the fluttering confetti veil, Nick was trying to decide which sparkle was bigger: the diamond ring that would hold onto her finger or the accepting smile that she wore in the night glow of Times Square.
