“Babe? Do you know how to tie a tie?” Nick called towards his wife in a nearby room. He frowned when he didn’t receive a response. With the untied tie around his neck, he navigated through the home, hoping to find her swiftly. “Babe?” he questioned. When he heard a toilet flush in response, he totally disregarded it. “I’ll be out to tie your tie in a second, babe, I have to brush my teeth.” Shrugging it off, Nick walked to the den and sat down, going through the miscellaneous emails on his phone just to pass time. When Bethany’s hand suddenly snaked onto Nick’s two tie strands, Nick jumped. Bethany laughed, “I always liked it when you wear ties. Makes you look handsome.” Nick, oblivious to the comment, twisted his head to attempt kiss the soft skin of her hands, but Bethany squealed at the sudden doorbell noise permeating the room, “They’re here! Let’s have a Christmas party!” Nick shook his head at his wife turned hostess, and then stood up to walk with her, hand on her waist, as she greeted her family. Her mom, her father, her only other older sister Faith, her husband, Nick’s parents and siblings and significant others filled the room. The once silent house turned into a clutter of smashed words looming overhead. Nick and Bethany together greeted everyone like the normal hostesses should, and soon everyone was seated at the table, watching Bethany fill the table with food that she had spent tedious hours making. Everyone fell into their own conversations, even Nick and Bethany, until Bethany’s mother hushed the entire crowd to ask one life changing question, “Nicholas, you and Bethany have been married for three years now, and I’m just wondering if I’ll have any grandchildren soon?” “Mom!” Bethany shrieked in horror that her mom would even ask such a question. Nick, beginning to laugh, looked at Bethany’s mom and was going to say some bullshit answer about ‘when God plans it’, but Bethany looked at him and asked, “Why are you laughing?” Nick swallowed and looked back at her surprisingly, “Because it was a funny question?” he said. Bethany looked at her mom, swallowed her pride, and then gave Nick a sickeningly sweet smile and a hand over her stomach, “Well it’s not gonna be funny anymore, because I’m pregnant.”

“Why are you so nervous? It’s just a Christmas party.” Nick said nonchalantly towards Amanda who clearly showed every nervous emotion. It was stitched onto her face, so evident that Nick, the obviously observant one, caught onto it. Amanda folded her arms over her chest and shrugged uncomfortably, gazing at the door she would walk into and wondering what was on the other side, “Maybe because this is your family? Maybe it’s because they’ll hate me? Maybe because I’m not a Jonas? A foreigner? A stranger?” Amanda was good at questions, there was no doubt about that, but Nick couldn’t believe the doubt he was hearing. “You’re my fiancee, Amanda, there’s no way that they could hate someone I’m going to marry.” Amanda shrugged again. She’s always been skeptical, but this was new territory. Nick, to try and ease her worries, slithered a swift hand around her waist, making sure she was comfortable. And Amanda wasn’t going to admit it, but she felt a little better. Walking into the house was a different story. Parents and grandparents holding little children on their laps, pets running around the house and all over the place seemed to overwhelm Amanda at first, but then after a few hellos and introductions as “the fiancee”, Amanda found herself swirling with greetings. She finally caught her breath as Nick told her to sit down on a nearby love seat and he was going to get them a glass of champagne. Amanda could feel the love seat shift next to her, and after looking over to her left she met the eyes of a familiar person that she knew other than Mrs. Jonas, Nick’s mother. “Happy holidays Mrs. Jonas.” Amanda said politely. Mrs. Jonas flashed her a genuine, happy smile, “Same to you sweetheart. You seem to be all over the place now that you’re with Nick. Man, that boy never slows down. I mean look at him now; he totally pivoted directions from going to get you a refreshment.” As soon as she said that, Amanda’s head twirled to find Nick. And when she did, she saw him sitting on the couch across from her, cuddling and toying with a blonde baby boy, probably a cousin or nephew, Amanda assumed. What she didn’t know was that her heart coated with love and amazement. Seeing Nick play with kids was not only encouraging, but invigorating to her. Nick looked up from the boy’s blue eyes and instantly locked with Amanda with a goofy grin that said ‘Can we keep him?’

The vibrating guitar strings brought Nick into one of those long, hard thinking trances. After stepping off the plane, he had been struck completely with nerves, knowing that in a few hours there would be an extreme change in his life. But for right now, this is what he needed—to get it down on paper and out of his head. It was like water draining from the pipe when Nick picked up his guitar. He could finish songs in minutes with no flaws. Slipping note after note into the air, Nick could barely hear his name being called above his trance. “Nick!” He shook his head, clamping his fingers on the strings and looking to his left, seeing Kevin leaning against the doorway, “I know you’re nervous.” Nick swallowed, “Why would you say that?” Kevin pushed himself off of the door and stood with his arms crossed, looking down on his brother and smiling, “Proposing is a big deal, Nick, there’s no way you can’t not be nervous.” Nick sighed, running his free hand over his tired face and hoping Kevin wouldn’t notice. “I just…I’m scared to death that she’ll either say no, or not love me enough back to marry me. I…I don’t know…it’s so stupid.” He shook his head and tried not to think that way. Kevin clicked his tongue, shaking his head ridiculously towards his little brother, “Lucy can’t and won’t say no. One, because you two have been dating for what? Five years? Yeah five years. That’s more than enough love to last a life time. I can guarentee that she’ll say yes in a heartbeat, if not a blink of an eye. You have nothing, and I do mean nothing, to worry about, bro. Just as long as you don’t forget the ring…that’s the important part.” Nick had always looked up to Kevin relationship wise, but he never new how much of a role model he could be. Numbing his nerves, Nick pushed the guitar aside, jumped off the bed, and then ran towards the door after swiping up his car keys. “Hey Nick?” Kevin piped up before shutting the door. “Yeah?” Nick replied, looking back. Kevin tossed a little black box in Nick’s direction, in which he caught, “You might need that if you want to propose correctly.” Nick chuckled, “I don’t know what I’d do without you, bro.” Nick waved to Kevin goodbye, and all was silent again. Except for the pounding in Nick’s heart as he jogged down the stairs of the hotel, bringing him one step closer to his long awaited future.

“You should really tell me what we’re doing before I have a panic attack.” she said sternly. Nick chuckled, thinking of the most wittiest come back that anyone could have come up with, “We’re waiting for the car.” Chelsea groaned, trying her hardest not to slap Nick on the shoulder and scream, demanding on what they were going to do. She never really liked surprises, so naturally waiting in high anticipation after coming off of a long flight wasn’t on her list of favorite things. “Nicholas…” She whined. Nick looked at her with a cocked head and a raised eyebrow, one of those looks that usually gets her to be quiet. But, knowing how persistent she is, Nick slipped his plump fingers into her own, threading them tightly and then putting it to rest on her hip, pulling them closer. As much as this usually gets her to be quiet, she couldn’t stop. She had to know what was going on at all costs or it freaked her out. And Nick, knowing exactly how she ticks, did the exact opposite. “Sometimes I question why I love you.” she said. Nick rolled his eyes when he saw the headlights of his desired Mustang come through the airport pick up line. Chelsea looked in the direction he was looking in and sharply sighed, “So we just waited for your Mustang?” Nick let a dark chuckle rumble through his lips, “Not exactly.” “Oh my god I hate you.” she groaned, getting angrier at the second. Nick quickly stepped in, pressing a lovely kiss to her temple, and telling her not to worry. But he knew that saying the exact words ‘don’t worry’ would make her worry. So instead, he tried something different. “Just get in the car and live a little.” he said as he took his spot in the driver’s seat. Chelsea sighed annoyingly, rolling her eyes. Nick wasn’t about to find out how much this was turning her on to be with a mysterious fiend, but he’ll never know. “I love you Chels.” he said wholeheartedly. She rolled her eyes, “Yeah yeah, whatever.”

Nick walked solemnly into his apartment, feeling a couple of words bounce around in his head. He knew that he either had to get them out of his head and on paper or it would drive him nuts. But as soon as his tired, brown eyes stitched onto a familiar green ones, he froze. “Melanie?” he questioned. The nervous girl flipped her curls around her shoulder, giving him an impish smile, “Um…hi?” Nick was surrounded, trapped, even though it was just one person in the room. But it wasn’t just one person. It was Melanie. The one who walked away from him after going off to fulfill a dream on Broadway, leaving Nick broken-hearted on stage as Marius. Needless to say that he never bounced back from that, and every day since he’s been a walking travesty ever since. “Wha…what are you doing here?” he asked. Melanie stood erect from the couch she was sitting on and swallowed her nerves. Nick pressed his back against the door he just walked through, becoming instantly afraid of what was going on. Did Kevin and Joe do this to get back at him? Or was it someone else? Who would do something so evil. “Um…” she started softly, “I know that it’s not my place to apologize for what I did to you, and I don’t expect you do reply or forgive me but um…I’m sorry for leaving you when you really needed me. And I’m sorry that I couldn’t be the perfect girlfriend to you, you know, supporting your dreams…” Melanie stopped speaking to walk dangerously close to Nick, making his breath climb in his throat, like she was a feral feline about to rip his heart out…again. Melanie gave one last look into his dark brown eyes and slowly, softly, leaned towards him to give him one of the most sincere kisses she could ever muster. Nick pulled away immediately, sensing something wasn’t right and he stood there, trying to think of anything to say, but silence was all he could come up with. He swallowed, and then immediately threw his original conscience out of the window as he kissed Melanie again, releasing all the feelings he missed showing her.

Sighing into a comfy couch, Nick placed the laptop in front of him. The anticipation coated him in a fit of nerves as he opened up Skype on his computer, knowing that in a few minutes he’d be talking to the one person he misses more than anything. It’s been a couple of months since they’ve been apart, and even after being together for four months Nick now knows his true feelings. Her icon popped up on his computer and upon clicking her name, the camera on his screen popped up to show a vacant wall. He laughed when he heard a faint gasp, and like a vision from heaven, she sat down in front of the computer which lighted up Nick’s world. “Hi!” she stated happily. For someone who he was missing for a while, she seemed to take this whole things lightly… “Well you seem happy.” Nick observed. The girl flashed a smile and shrugged, “I miss you…so naturally I was happy to know that you were able to call. How is the city over the pond?” she asked. Nick ran a hand through his curls and nodded, “It’s amazing over here, Jen, you need to come some day. It’s almost as beautiful as you.” Nearly a couple thousand miles apart, and Nick was still amazed to see her blush. “Oh stop.” she said, swatting off his compliment. They fell into the easiest of conversations, one thing that Nick had been afraid of because of being extremely far away. He even played her a new song he had been working on, including his muse in the new city he was in. When thirty minutes rolled around into an hour and a half, Nick’s father signaled that he had to be leaving soon. “Duty calls?” Jen questioned. Nick nodded, a somber look covering on his face. Jen gave a bright smile on her side of the computer, “Well don’t sweat it, you can call me whenever you can. I’ll still be here.” Nick looked up at the screen, hoping to God that she wasn’t lying. “Alright well…I gotta go. I love you.” Nick froze. They hadn’t gotten to the ‘I love you’ stage yet, but Nick had been harboring those feelings for quite a while, so Jen was instantly wide eyed, “What? Was that a ‘like’ or ‘love?’” Nick swallowed his fear that crept into his throat and tried to make it seem as if it were something easy, “Um…love?” he said. And Jen replied the easiest response, causing Nick to sigh into a happy demeanor, “That’s what I thought. I love you too.”

Glancing yet again at her phone, frowning disappointingly that only a minute had passed since last checking. Frantic thoughts scurried her brain as she started to think the worst. He’s twenty minutes late, where is he? She thought urgently, checking her phone for any missed calls or text messages, only to meet face to face with none of the above. After running a nervous hand through her tousled, freely dried waves, she looked up and her heart had dropped with a ten pound weight attached to it. Walking like an angel, sprinkled with sunlight, Nick walked down the cement strip with his grin growing on his face with every step. Abby tried her hardest just to sprint into his arms and knock him to the ground, but nothing could feel better than his big muscles gripping to every inch of her midsection as her feet left the pavement and spun in circles. “I know I had agreed to you touring for eight months, but this was sure as hell hard.” Abby whispered breathlessly, trying not to let the wetness in her eyes be declared happy tears. Nick pressed a soft kiss to her neck, the secret weak spot he knows to use to his advantage, and gently placed her feet back onto the ground. He tried to mimic her brown eyes but she didn’t want to look at him just yet, because she had feared she would start crying. Instead, she clung to him like all the time in the world was theirs. “I missed you so much baby.” He murmured against her forehead. Abby closed her eyes slowly, breathing in his earthy cologne stained on his skin, “I missed you too. You’re not going away for eight months ever again.”

Nick’s heart thumped in his chest, eagerly pushing more blood into his system because of how nervous he had become. His feet were dragging through the sand as he tried to match his steps with the older, white haired man in front of him, which happened to be Clarissa’s father. He had one important question to ask him, and walking on the beach in this silence was sickening him. “Um,” Nick started, sticking his hands in his khaki pant pockets, “I know you’re wondering why I asked to talk to you today.” The older man let out a soft chuckle and sighed, “I’m not necessarily wondering anymore. I know a man wanting to propose when I see one.” Nick swallowed the lump that lodged in his throat, feeling his shoulders relax just a little bit more. “Okay well you only made this a hell of a lot more easier then,” he laughed. Clarissa’s dad nodded as he looked over at Nick, “I like you Nick, only because you make my little girl the happiest I have ever seen. I was happy that Clarissa invited you down to our beach house because I had been wanting to meet you. And this trip made me realize that you were the only other man, besides myself, that she could love. I am more than happy to give you my blessing to marry my daughter, on one condition…” he said lowly. Nick’s heart dropped at the word “condition”. What would it be? Would it be something he didn’t like? Nick swallowed nervously, “What condition?” Both of the two grown men stopped walking through the shore as Clarissa’s dad smiled, “You take care of her as if she’s a goddess, and nothing less.” Nick closed his eyes and sighed, feeling a calm smile cross his face, “I will.”

“Beth?” Nick questioned softly. The girl kneeling by the newly decorated Christmas tree turned her head, showing Nick her bright blue eyes, “Yeah?” she questioned. Nick smiled, opening one of his arms like a wing, “I think the tree has enough decorations, Come sit with me, I need a snuggle buddy near the fire.” Beth rolled her eyes, pushing herself into a standing position by putting her hands on her knees and bending upwards. She walked over, sock coated feet padding against the hardwood floor, falling gracefully into Nick’s side. She felt his big arm swoop around her shoulder, holding as much of her as he could. Both of them sighed at the moment, both feeling the small tinge of the crackling fire Nick had built in their apartment. “I love Christmas so much.” Beth whispered softly. Nick leaned his head against her own, smiling to himself as he said, “I was hoping you would say that.” and silently, unbeknownst to Beth, Nick pulled out a shining million faceted diamond ring out of his pocket, making Beth gasp in a wondrous delight. “Nick, you didn’t.” Nick grabbed her delicate hand and slipped the ring on her left hand finger, quietly speaking, “I was hoping that this would be the last Christmas I would spend alone…so would you maybe want to marry me? You know, be with me forever?” Beth stared at the diamond and how it sparkled with the fire’s blaze, and with two breathless words she nodded, “Of course.“

Beth?” Nick questioned softly. “Babe?” Nick questioned, turning the door knob and entering her apartment. He thought he would see her sitting on the couch, but the apartment was empty. “I’m back here!” Nick heard her yell. With a smile on his face, he unbuttoned the top button on his suit jacket and heard his shoes click against the hardwood floor the closer he got to her. Nick spotted her in the bathroom, taking a strand of her brown hair and turning it around a rod to make her individual curls more spirally. Nick smiled, taking her off guard as he came from behind and wrapped his big arms around her waist, pulling her more towards his chest than the counter. She let out a shrill giggle that soon choked on silence as Nick gently pushed her hair to the side. She melted into his touch, what usually happens whenever he is around, and he held her tighter to him, trying to hold as much of her heart as possible. Quietly, he pressed a kiss to her now bare neck, and the silence coated them like a blanket. Sighing, Nick snickered, “Happy birthday Kayla, you’re officially eighteen years old.”
